Flat roofing is generally the cheaper option due to the more straight-forward structural engineering process required and the materials typically used (excluding contemporary materials such as zinc) are less expensive. But this will result in lower ceilings which can make your new extension appear less spacious on the inside and usually requires more maintenance over time due to the flat roof design and weathering over time.
Pitched roofing is a more complex structural engineering task and so comes at a greater cost, but the benefits are clear. It can create higher ceilings which make for a more spacious feel indoors, alternatively that additional space can be used for a loft and for insulation purposes that make for a more efficient use of your energy bills. Pitched roofs are also said to have a longer lifespan due to slanted shape and the higher quality materials used which provides greater resistance against weathering and means less maintenance work is required.
